The historic Mount Vernon Public Library hosted a kick-off party for the Big Read in Westchester. The special two-month national project encouraged entire communities to read, and discuss a single book. Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, was the book selected for a series of discussions, festivals, and performances, which were held throughout the county in October and November.

Mount Vernon’s celebration featured the talented storyteller Carolyn Evans, who performed as one of the Harlem Renaissance’s most prolific authors, Zora Neale Hurston. Dressed in period costume, Evans captured the attention of both adults and children, as she brought life to several of Hurston’s famed works.

Everyone in attendance received a complimentary copy of the featured novel and a CD. A wonderful jazz quartet, and children’s workshops rounded off the exciting afternoon.

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest, presented in Westchester by the Westchester Arts Council in partnership with Purchase College and the Westchester Library System.
